Iraqi Charoset

חרוסת עיראקית

IraqMizrahiPassover Pareve 15 min 8 servings Easy

An Iraqi Jewish Passover charoset made in a strikingly simple style: dark date syrup topped or mixed with coarse walnuts. More liquid than many Ashkenazi versions, it functions almost like a sweet dip for the Seder.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup silan (date syrup)
  • 3/4 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 pinch kosher salt

Instructions

  1. 1

If desired, lightly toast the walnuts in a dry pan for a few minutes to deepen their flavor, then let them cool.

  2. 2

Coarsely chop the walnuts so the mixture retains texture.

  3. 3

Pour the silan into a serving bowl.

  4. 4

Stir in half of the walnuts, along with the cinnamon and a tiny pinch of salt if using.

  5. 5

Scatter the remaining walnuts over the top.

  6. 6

Serve at the Seder as a sweet charoset for dipping or spooning onto matzo.

Kosher notes

Use kosher-for-Passover silan and plain walnuts with no additives. Naturally pareve.
