Greek spiced meatballs, often elongated in shape and simmered in tomato sauce, beloved in Romaniote and Sephardic kitchens.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, grated
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

    Mix the beef with onion, garlic, cumin, egg, bread crumbs, and salt.

    Shape into oval meatballs and chill briefly to firm them.

    Brown the meatballs in olive oil on all sides.

    Add tomato sauce, cover, and simmer gently until cooked through.

    Serve hot with rice or bread.

Kosher notes

Use kosher beef and pareve breadcrumbs; avoid cheese accompaniments for a meat meal.
