CaribbeanSephardiPassover Pareve 15 min 8 servings Easy

A Passover charoset shaped by the Sephardic diaspora of the Caribbean and northern South America. Dates, figs, coconut, nuts, and tropical fruits create a sweet, textured paste recalling mortar while reflecting local produce.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup pitted dates
  • 1/2 cup dried figs
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup chopped mango or pineapple
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or almonds
  • 1/4 cup sweet red wine or grape juice
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of ground cloves

Instructions

  1. 1

Chop the dates and figs finely, or pulse them in a food processor.

  2. 2

Add the coconut, tropical fruit, and nuts.

  3. 3

Season with cinnamon and a pinch of cloves.

  4. 4

Pour in the wine or grape juice a little at a time.

  5. 5

Pulse or mash until the mixture forms a thick, spoonable paste.

  6. 6

Taste and adjust with more fruit or liquid as needed.

  7. 7

Chill for at least 30 minutes so the flavors meld.

  8. 8

Serve as part of the Passover seder plate or meal.
